FRS/GMRS is a powerful two-way radio system that serves as an adjunct to the MERRAG two-way radio system. FRS is an acronym for Family Radio System. The radios are inexpensive and relatively short-range. They are ideal for equipping families and small neighborhood groups with their own two-way radio capabilities. This is imperative because in the event of a disaster normal communications systems such as the telephone may well fail.

In this circumstance families and neighbors use their FRS/GMRS radios to gather information about possible injuries or hazardous conditions in their neighborhoods. Once they have gathered this information they report it directly to their local MERRAG radio carrier who relays it to the Montecito Fire District Disaster Operations Center (DOC).
